Our Homestead

We are modern day homesteaders, with a passion for preserving heritage breeds of poultry. We maintain small breeding flocks which we find easier to manage for both the health and well being of the animal, and also allows us to focus on breed quality. We do our best to keep three separate bloodlines of our favourite breeds and varieties, this allows us to maintain genetic diversity.

We keep closed flocks to maintain our homesteads biosecurity as well as breed for the traits we are seeking to achieve for each breed we keep. We do offer hatching eggs and day old chicks most of the year. We do occasionally offer ready to lay pullets, cockerels, and breeding trios.

We start fertility testing mid February and do not start releasing eggs until we have achieved a 90% or better fertility rate. Our hatch rates across all breeds is an average 86.6% for picked up eggs. Shipped eggs have a lower hatch rate which depends on the handling during transit. Our customers have helped us a tremendous amount with the average shipped hatch rate and it falls around 58.2% on average.

We are active members of the American Poultry Association, along with a few other poultry breeders and fanciers associations.

We breed our Marans and Ameraucanas to the APA Standard. We breed our Canadian Bresse to meet the draft standard for the breed here within North America. There is not currently a standard for the Silverudd's Blue breed, however, there are a set of guidelines that breeders do adhere to. We breed to meet those guidelines which you can view here. There is an acceptance for splash coloured birds to have willow coloured legs and feet, we only add splash coloured birds to our breeding program if they have slate coloured legs and feet.

For any additional information about our breeds please visit our breed specific pages, and if you have any questions please contact us. We are more than happy to answer any that you may have.
